The "Ber" Months

I thought it was bad when Christmas started in the States as soon as Halloween was over. You know what I'm talking about... Come November 1st, you will find the following two things in almost every store, (1) leftover Halloween candy now marked 50% off and (2) Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, candies, gifts, etc. for sale. Well, if that wasn't bad enough (poor Thanksgiving), apparently Filipinos have a love of Christmas that would put your average American to shame. Throughout the Philippines, the Christmas season takes place during what are referred to as the "ber months" meaning all the months that end with -ber (September, October, November, and December). Yup, that's right. The Christmas season officially began on September 1st. Last week, I was sitting in McDonald's (or McDos as they like to call it here) and Mariah Carey's classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You" came on. Then this morning, we had our first set of children Christmas carolers from the nearby neighborhoods. Apparently, they come by and sing carols outside your gate expecting some coins or candy in return. The Filipino Christmas season has begun!

  1. Just wanted to let you know that I'm still following along! I find this post hilarious. I thought it was weird in Canada because Thanksgiving comes before Halloween... but the ber months are even weirder. Dave and I had dinner with Jake and Christianna today. They're engaged! We talked about you tonight too. They said that it was so awesome how you had talked about doing something like what you're doing now and you actually followed through. Love you my friend.
