Only a Dollar

It constantly saddens me to see what a dark, ugly, and depraved world we really live in. Its much easier to try to ignore it or fill our lives with other distractions so we don't have to think about it. But pretending that it doesn't exist doesn't change the reality that it does.

Today I met with representatives from several NGOs in Cebu that do outreach to freelance sex workers for a focus group discussion. I heard the stories of several of their clients that are just heartbreaking. I heard about a mother who, no longer able to sell her own body due to her age, now prostitutes her teenage daughter out so they can afford to eat. I heard stories of 11 and 12 year old girls being sold to taxi drivers for oral sex for as little as 50 pesos. That's only one dollar. There are these girls called "cardboard girls" because they have sex with customers in dark alleys on a piece of cardboard so they aren't on the street itself.

This is reality.
