This week, I had the pleasure of going with one of our social workers, Ate Igie, to her home in Pasil (one of the barangays / neighborhoods in Cebu City) for some delicious halo-halo. For those of you who aren't familiar... the name halo-halo comes from the Tagalog word halò which means "mix" which is quite an appropriate name because you can put just about anything into halo-halo (and people do!). It is a popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and condensed or evaporated milk to which are added various sweet beans and fruits. There isn't any one specific recipe for this dessert and a wide variety of ingredients are used including kidney beans, jackfruit, sweet potato, corn kernels, flan, avocados, and bananas. See what I mean? It's quite a mixture! In terms of the arrangement, most of the ingredients (fruits, beans, etc) are first placed inside a tall glass, followed by the shaved ice. This is then sprinkled with sugar and topped with either leche flan, ube halaya, or ice cream. Lastly, condensed or evaporated milk is poured onto the mixture before serving. Just make sure you mix it all together before eating it or else you are in for an interesting dessert.
Now that you have a little background... the place Ate Igie took us to in Pasil made some very delicious halo-halo. And, since this was my first one, the bar for future halo-halos has been set quite high. This halo-halo was mostly fruit and some avocado. Call me crazy, but I don't think one with sweet potatoes, corn, and kidney beans would be very good...

(this one has some leche flan, fruits, ube ice cream, and cereal of some kind)
