So it the evening of my 3rd day in Cebu and I thought I would give you some of my initial random thoughts...
-- driving in Cebu is crazy... there are lanes painted on the roads, but no one follows them. Basically, the most aggressive driver wins. Before coming here, I thought that I would get a motorcycle... after about 5 minutes of driving, I realized that I didn't want to die! I was told that its not "if" you get into an accident, its "when"! Yikes!
-- it is pretty hot here and there is about 80% humidity everyday. Thankfully, I have been able to avoid the afro look so far.
-- we went to a supermarket at the mall today that has just about everything you could ever want, including crab flavored pringles, dried fish in a bag (like jerky), and boxed milk.
-- today was my first brown out at work. Apparently, you take a chance every time you get into an elevator here because you never know when you are going to have brownouts or how long they will last... You do not want to get stuck in a tiny elevator in this weather.
-- there are tiny geckos everywhere... I mean everywhere, there are even a few crawling around now on the walls of my room.
-- the other interns have been great and have been taking us to all their favorite local spots and giving us a tour of the various malls and grocery store options.
-- trying to adjust to a 15 hour time difference and subsequent jet lag is not fun, but I think I am almost adjusted.
-- there are Starbucks and McDonalds everywhere... including Cebu.
-- you can eat rice at every meal if you wanted to.
Tonight we are going to a pub. Tomorrow we go on an official tour of the city. After work tomorrow, we are taking an overnight boat ride to another island where we will spend Saturday and Sunday. Then we will take another overnight boat ride Sunday night arriving back in Cebu at 7am and head to work! I can't wait. It should be a lot of fun!
I remember having to walk across the street in Cambodia and practically closing my eyes, because there are no crosswalks and everybody just swerves around you. I can imagine how scary it is to drive. AND the driver who took us around would never slow down for pedestrians or cars.. He would just honk at them and maintain speed. ACK!
